European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
